Energizing Start to Mornings

As the sun peeked over Bali's picturesque landscapes daily, the Mad Monkey team jumped out of bed for a workout with the incredible AE trainers. Led by these fitness wizards, we knew we were in for an exciting ride filled with workouts and much-needed team bonding.

From yoga sessions to high-energy group training against Bali's breathtaking backdrop, our crew embraced every challenge thrown our way. The AE trainers made sure each workout catered to everyone, making us feel included and motivated, no matter our fitness level.

Join your very own biker gang for this unique tour around the historic town of Agnes Water 1770. For many people the Whitsundays is the highlight of their time on Australia’s East Coast and it’s easy to see why! Pure white sandy beaches, crystal clear oceans filled with colourful reefs, and sunsets to make all of your friends and family jealous – the Whitsundays is truly magical.

You’ll get to spend 2 whole days sailing round the islands dropping anchor to snorkel, explore the islands and to sleep under the stars. Taking a lesson is a Must!

It is this inclusiveness that ensures that whether almost pro or a complete beginner any traveler will feel completely comfortable at a lesson. This is certainly something that I can personally vouch for, as someone who has trouble not falling over on land I was understandably a bit nervous for how my limited balance would hold up against the waves of Bondi! However, I should not have worried, the instructors Justin and Sam were absolute pros with unlimited patience! Their enthusiasm was infectious and their clear instructions and safety training meant that I could focus on the goal of standing up (just once!) Despite being predictably terrible I stood up a couple of times, which just goes to show that with the right guidance miracles can still happen!

Bondi too expensive?

Surf lessons aren’t the cheapest activity you can do, at Bondi a beginner lesson of 2hours will set you back $110, however with travelling there is always a way to save a little bit of money. Change location from iconic Bondi to chill out Maroubra and you can save a cool $40. Money which would be best put towards engaging in another important Australian pastime, barbecuing and drinking an ice-cold beer!

On the 25th of April will be Anzac Day, the National Day of Remembrance in Australia.

What does it stand for?

ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps)

ANZAC was the name of an army of Australian and New Zealand volunteer corps during World War 1. ANZAC Day is celebrated on April 25, when Australia and the New Zealand set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey as a major strategic part of the allied effort.

ANZAC’s pride themselves in courage, mate ship, endurance, ingenuity, loyalty, and good humor.

The day was originally designated to remember the veterans of WWI in Gallipoli specifically and later became synonymous in remembering all events where Australian and New Zealand Soldiers have fought and fallen in battle. In Australia, the day is a major national holiday with large events held countrywide.

ANZAC Day is not just about what happened in Gallipoli, but also about what is happening right now. Even though we are not at war many courageous servicemen and women are still serving their country. It’s an important day to thank those men and women for serving in war zones and as peacekeepers.

Each year on April 25, Australians look back and remember those courageous soldiers who lost their lives or were wounded in battles on behalf of Australia. Many people wear flowers such as rosemary or a poppy on ANZAC-day in respect of those who didn’t return.

What to do in Sydney:

The most famous service to attend is the ‘Dawn Service’ held at The Cenotaph in Sydney’s Martin Place at 4.30am. Thousands of people gather to honor fallen soldiers. Following the service a march will start at 9am from at the crossing of Martin Place and Elizabeth St and will continue south on Elizabeth St to Liverpool St.

The Coloured Diggers march is an alternative to the main march in the city that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders who have fought and died for their county. The march starts from ‘The Block’ and will begin at the Redfern Community Centre at 10am where there will be entertainment, music, tea and coffee and traditional Anzac Day pies. The march starts later.

At Bondi beach the Dawn Commemorative service starts at 6am at the North end of the Beach. This is a sight to behold with thousands of participants showing their respect as the sun rises over the Ocean.

Although ANZAC day is a poignant day of remembrance, there is also a sense of celebration and pride in the air and needless to say, a tradition of getting together with friends to enjoy some Aussie traditions. Namely, the chance to play two up.

But, what is the Two-up anyway?

Two-up is a traditional gambling game that was played extensively by Australia’s soldiers during World War I. Now it is only played publicly on ANZAC day

Port Stephens is a coastal town about 2.5 hours north of Sydney’s CBD by car.

Boasting Idyllic scenery, no less than 26 sandy beaches and super laid-back vibes, Port Stephens is one of those hidden gems that many travellers overlook.

What to see and what to do?

There are plenty of things to keep you as busy or as chilled as you like while visiting Port Stephens whether it’s just for the day or a more extended stay.

For the more adventurous you may wish to jump aboard a cruise to spot Dolphins all year round or Whales if it’s the season. All water activities are catered for with great surf, swimming, snorkelling and fishing topping the list. For the land lovers why not delve deep into the Dunes, where you can try your hand at sandboarding, essentially snowboarding on sand! It’s also possible to take a Camel ride or a quad bike safari on the Sand Dunes.

Of course, for the more relaxed of us or when you are all adventured out you can take advantage of any one of the world class beaches and kick back while watching the wave’s crash in. There are a multitude of excellent local bars, cafes and restaurants to keep you well feed and water as well as a great selection of local stores offering excellent retail therapy options.

How to get there?

Port Stephens can be easily reached by car or by booking a day trip. You can also travel by train or bus, but the trip takes about 5hours so keep that in mind.

There are a few tour operators offering trips to Port Stephens. The price range from $99 to $199 so most people can find a budget to suit them.

What to expect from a tour to Port Stephens?

We were lucky enough to take a day trip to Port Stephens with local tour operators Coast Warriors . The adventure began early with a 0700 departure from the city.

Within 1 hour we were out of the city and into grass fields, where we stopped to meet a very friendly mob of Kangaroos. These Roo’s are used to human visitors and more than happy to pose for a selfie or two.

Next stop, the famous Port Stephens Sand Dunes, where we took a 4wd bus across very bumpy, sandy tracks to arrive at a prime Sandboarding slope. We were kitted out with boards, given a quick tutorial and then hit the hill! Needless to say much fun was had with many a friendship made while battling to get to grips with a very unique technique. Even if you fail in perfecting the stand-up technique you can still have a blast sitting on your ass!

After brushing the sand from our hair we bounced our way back across the Dunes to make the short hop in to town to rendezvous with our Dolphin Tour. This part of the day is optional, either splash out the extra 20 bucks to take part in the 90 minute Dolphin spotting cruise or take the time at your leisure to check out the local vibe.

The cruise itself was a little bit chilly due to the sea breeze so come prepared and pack something warm, even if it is a sunny day. However, we did get rewarded with a pod of delightful, inquisitive dolphins greeting us out in the bay. Some of these cheeky characters were confident enough to swim within touching distance of our boat, magical, and great for photos too. There’s also the opportunity to take a ride in the boom net of the boat if you want to get as up close as possible with both the majestic beasts and the water. Exhilarating!

We were back on shores just in time for lunch where our excellent guides from Coastal Warriors had the barbeque fired up and had grilled up a storm. We were treated to a tasty BBQ meal with good company, what else in ‘Straya?! After lunch there was time to enjoy the sun before setting off on a short (optional) hike to the top of Tomaree Mountain.

The walk to the top takes about 20 minutes and is quite strenuous with lots of stairs. However, the hike was well worth it. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful! Stunning archipelago scenery and perfect beaches as far as the eye can see. After the decent back to sea level there was a short stop for a quick dip at one of the stunning beaches we had just ogled from afar. The water was delicious and we were treated to A show from mother nature with some showers in the distance creating multiple Rainbows over the ocean. The kind of thing you read about in Fairy Tales. Wow, what a way to end the day!

The drive back to Sydney was full of tales from the day shared with new friends and of course the chance for a cheeky nap. On arrival back in Sydney our hosts for the day offered those of us with energy left in the tank the opportunity to join them for a drink in the city. A fitting Aussie wrap up to an awesome Aussie day.

You may have a rough idea of what to expect, and what you hope to see once you’re in the water, but there are heaps of different tour options available, and it can be a little overwhelming. Whether you’re after a relaxing day out on a luxurious vessel, or looking for more of a budget option that still ticks most of the boxes, there’s always something for everyone.

5 Main Points To Consider When Choosing A Tour:

If you’ve never been scuba diving before, but want to experience the reef’s full potential, we highly recommend you try an Introductory Dive . A Divemaster will assist in giving you a taste of life under the sea, with a small group of other novice divers. The experience lasts for about 30 minutes, and it will be fully guided from start to finish. A Divemaster can take you as deep as 10 meters and will make sure to point out different types of marine life for you to take a closer look at. Although you won’t be able to talk to one another while underwater, you’ll be in constant communication with your Divemaster through hand signals and scuba sign language, which the crew will teach you on the way out to the reef.

** In order to qualify for an introductory dive, you must first complete a medical questionnaire.

If you already have a scuba certification, you are permitted to dive alone (actually with your diving buddy) at the reef. There is more freedom with this option, and the dives last longer, but it is only available for those who have their PADI Open Water, Advanced, Rescue or Divemaster certification.

** If you enjoy the dive, you can get certified here in Cairns. PADI is the world’s most popular and recognised diving certification, and is offered by Divers Den, Down Under Dive and Cairns Dive Centre.

If diving in the deep isn’t your thing, stay closer to the surface and snorkel instead. You still get an incredible view of the marine life and reef, and get the same amount of time in the water as those who are diving. Note that if you do choose to dive, the remainder of your day at the reef can be spent swimming, snorkeling or enjoying other activities your boat may offer!

The first glimpse of the Three Sisters rock formation will instantly showcase the reason this location is deemed a must see by backpackers the world over.

DIY – Cheap & relax

Like in all aspects of travelling there is no right way ‘to do’ the Blue Mountains. Independent spirits or those backpacking on a budget can travel solo on the train from Sydney central to Katoomba (bonus saving option is to go on a Sunday when all travel is $2.60!), the nearest town to the Blue Mountains.

Katoomba itself is worth a look as it is full of cute craft stores, art galleries and fab restaurants where you can spend the money you have saved by taking the train! However as lovely as Katoomba is, the star of the show is certainly the Blue Mountains themselves, there are buses that leave the town every five minutes to take travellers to the first viewpoint, where those travelling on their own can check out the information centre to help decide which route to take, and whether to take the road less travelled or follow the crowds…

If taking the train a must do is to stop off at Wentworth Falls on the way back from Katoomba to Sydney, the Charles Darwin walk is truly glorious and there is nothing better than the opportunity to have a refreshing cool down paddle in natural waterfalls. The best part of taking the train means being able to take your time, and spending it surrounded by the incredible sights and sounds of nature is surely what travelling is all about!

9 Reasons Why You Want To Visit The Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is a famous wine region less than 2 hours from Sydney. Although specifically known for its Semillon and Shiraz, the Hunter Valley has more to offer than just wine. Here’s a couple of reasons why you should try to make a visit while staying in Sydney.

1. A good excuse for a few daytime drinks.

As part of your journey, you will stop at different wineries to try sparkling, rose, white, red and maybe some Porto. Try to make it as early as possible so you can get the ball rolling and the wine flowing when the cellar doors open at 10 am.

2. Take a break from Goon.

Goon is fine (and cheap!) but let’s be honest, taste wise, you can find better. How about exploring a famous part of the country while drinking amazing wines? Sounds more promising than drinking goon on your bunk bed right?

3. Wine tasting is cheaper than you think.

Most of the cellar doors do not charge you for a tasting (and if they do, it would be around $5). You normally get to try 4 to 8 wines at each cellar door. After the tasting you can decide if you would like to buy a bottle, there is no pressure to purchase.

4. It’s just so pretty.

The landscapes are gorgeous, green and lush, with heaps of vineyards and rolling hills. You might even spot Kangaroos, Wallabies or other Ozzie wildlife. Something to make your Instagram followers jealous! ��

5. After wine, there are Spirits.

As well as trying posh wines, you can visit a cool Australian organic and award-winning vodka distillery, where you can “tube test” a couple of their products. They also have gins, schnapps, liqueurs, etc.

6. Did someone say “Cheese”?

Everyone knows that wine and cheese go hand in hand. Make sure you make a stop at the Hunter Valley Smelly Cheese shop (yes that’s its real name!). They offer a degustation as well as the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of fabulous cheese and treats.

7. For the love of chocolate

Chocolate lovers can also satisfy their sweet tooth with some delicious and local products at the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company.

8. It’s a good escape from the city.

Sydney is gorgeous but also really busy. Escaping to the Hunter Valley is a great opportunity to relax, clean up your lungs from the city pollution and explore a more peaceful corner of Australia.

9. One of the biggest wine regions in Australia.

With as many as 150 wineries and cellar doors, you could easily spend weeks exploring the Hunter Valley. Fortunately, you can get a good feel of what the Hunter Valley has to offer on a jam packed day trip. As well as being one of the biggest wine regions, it is also the oldest wine region in Australia. Boasting almost 200 years of history wine production started in the Hunter during 1825, only 40 years after first European settlers arrived on Australia shores in January 1788.

Final tip:

The Hunter Valley is not easily accessible by public transport. Even if it was, there is such long distance between wineries than it wouldn’t be tricky to make full use of your time using public services. This leaves us with 2 options to visit the Hunter Valley: Renting a car or joining one of the numerous Hunter Valley wine tours.

Renting a car can be fun and gives you freedom to visit the wineries of your choice. However, we don’t necessarily recommend it unless you have a designated driver and let’s face it who wants to be the driver on a wine tasting day!? Remember, drink driving is dangerous and illegal. Don’t do it. It’s also a complicated area to navigate so you may end up spending more time on google maps than at wineries.

To make the most out of a day it is best to hop on a Hunter Valley one day tour from Sydney. We highly recommend this option as you will be able to drink as much as you like throughout the day. Not only will you get to see some stunning beaches, but you’ll also get to walk through a beautiful park and even see some Aboriginal artwork. While the trail is considered moderate, there are some steep steps and sandy sections, but the views and experience are definitely worth it!

Where is it?

The Spit Bridge is a key connection between Sydney and the Northern Suburbs, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city. The starting point of the walk is on the northern side of the bridge.

How to get there

Starting from Wynward, take a bus that will only take 25 minutes to reach Spit West Reserve. Once you arrive, walk for 500 meters to reach the bridge.

Although the beach is not very busy, there is a small lifesaving club that provides a stinger net for safe swimming all year round.

Kewarra Beach

We’d like to formally introduce you to Uncle Brian’s , one of the best backpacker tour companies in all of Cairns. Uncle Brian’s has been locally owned and operated since 1995. They know Cairns and the surrounding areas better than anyone and offer only two tours: ‘ Cape Tribbbin ’ ventures north to the Daintree National Park, and ‘ Fun, Falls and Fores t’ to the waterfalls at the Atherton Tablelands, south-west of Cairns.

1. Cape Tribbin’

Get ready to explore the oldest living rainforest in the world, and swim on remote tropical beaches , with Uncle Brian’s ‘Cape Tribbbin’. Located three hours north of Cairns, the Daintree National Park and settlement of Cape Tribulation will be yours to discover for the wilderness experience of a lifetime.

After getting picked up from your hostel around 7:00 am, you’ll begin the journey north. First stop: Port Douglas and 4 Mile Beach. Port Douglas is the gateway to two World Heritage listed sites, and offers beautiful resorts, quirky boutiques, delicious seafood and mango coloured sunsets. Here you’ll have free-time to wander around the small town, swim at the beach and get to know the other backpackers on your trip, before continuing up to the rainforest.

The Daintree Rainforest, Daintree National Park, Daintree River and Daintree Reef were named after an English geologist and photographer. Richard Daintree spent a number of years in the Tropical North in the 1800s, during which time he pioneered geological studies and photographed his everyday life in Queensland, mining expeditions and the aboriginal people. Some of his photographs can still be found in the National Museum of Australia today.

As you reach the Daintree River, make sure to keep all arms and legs inside the boat during your crocodile cruise. Learn about the history of the river and the surrounding mountains, while trying to spot saltwater crocodiles swimming, sunbathing or nesting . You’ll also see large mangrove trees, an assortment of birds and maybe even a snake or two, hanging out in the trees! Following your croc cruise, jump back on the bus and cross the river via ferry. Now it’s time to hit up Cape Tribulation!

After his ship was badly damaged in Endeavour Reef in 1770, Captain Cook stumbled across the hidden gem of Cape Tribulation. Named for the misfortune he endured on his journey, he couldn’t have been more wrong about what he had accidentally discovered. Cape Tribulation is situated directly between the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, offering the best of everything: extraordinary views of lush green trees, white sandy beaches and turquoise-blue water. Put your face paint on and explore the area. Don’t forget, lunch in included on the tour and you’ll get to eat it on the beach!

Did you know, the most dangerous bird in the world can be found in the Daintree Rainforest? Imagine an ostrich crossed with a velociraptor… that’s what a cassowary looks like, and can grow to be taller than you . It is also one of over 600 unique species found only here in the Daintree Rainforest. Hopefully you spot one of these ‘dinosaur birds’ on your guided rainforest walk. You might also get introduced to the Strangler Fig, but don’t worry, these constricting vines only attack trees. The vines wrap themselves around their host, suffocating it over many years, before the tree eventually dies and disintegrates, leaving the spooky hollow trunk of it’s murderer. No one knows the rainforest better than Uncle Brian’s, and you’re bound to see an assortment of unique animals and plants along the boardwalk!

Your final stop of the day will be to the Alexandra Range Lookout, where the rainforest truly meets the reef. You might even catch sunset here and take a group photo with all your new friends, before enjoying the journey back to Cairns together. 2. Fun, Falls and Forest

It’s 7:30 am: Uncle Brian is waiting outside your hostel to whisk you away to some of the most phenomenal waterfalls in all of Australia. Make sure you have your camera, bathers, towel, a bottle of water and sunscreen; Uncle Brian’s will supply everything else!

The Atherton Tablelands are known for their natural beauty, crystal clear waters and impressive mountainous landscapes. What sets the Tablelands apart from the other beautiful wonders around Cairns, and even Australia, are the waterfalls. Fun, Falls and Forest, here we come!

The start of your journey around the Tablelands, will take you on a walk through the rainforest to Babinda Boulders. Take a dip and cool off in the swimming hole, and then warm up again with a hot cup of tea or coffee and a selection of cakes. Here you will embark on a guided walk to learn about the rainforest and an Aboriginal tale, called The Boulder’s Legend: A forbidden, secret romance, that was doomed from the start, and an untimely demise for one. The Boulders are still haunted with their spirits to this day, and some visitors still hear cries coming from the rocks. Will you be one of them?

The second stop of your day is to Josephine Falls, which will truly test how tightly you’ve tied up your speedos. This tiered cascade waterfall flows down Josephine Creek, over and around massive boulders, smoothing them out to create a natural water slide. Start with the basics, sliding down on your bum, and when you’re feeling a bit more confident, go for the more adventurous options such as the Superman, Rodeo Bull or 360 spin, or grab a few mates and slide down as a train. We guarantee you’ll have a blast, and won’t want to leave this amazing swimming hole.

After all that swimming, you’re bound to be hungry! Time for a delicious, hot, 2 course dinner at The Falls Teahouse. Try out some locally sourced, homemade iced tea at this incredible property, overlooking the green rolling hills. No one would’ve guessed that the famous Millaa Millaa Falls were just around the corner...

Following lunch, it’s just a short drive to the colossal Millaa Millaa Falls. At 18m tall, this heritage-listed plunge waterfall is certain to give you a deep tissue massage when you stand underneath it. Millaa Millaa is just over 800m above sea-level, meaning the water is incredibly fresh, and will most definitely wake you up if you’re starting to tire out. Perhaps you recognise this waterfall as the location for the Herbal Essences hair flick? Get a few practise attempts in, and don’t worry if you don’t have much hair, even bald heads have been known to successfully do the flick. If you didn’t bring your own camera, your tour guide will take some photos on theirs, which will appear on the Uncle Brian’s Facebook Page within a day or so, for you to tag, download and share.

Your penultimate stop of the day will be afternoon tea at the beautiful blue Lake Eacham. This volcanic crater has filled up over time, creating a 65m deep lake that is lukewarm in temperature and perfect for an evening swim while the sun sets. If you’re not a big swimmer, then there’s a few platforms where you can watch the fish and turtles swim around. Keep an eye out for Dave, the sole freshwater crocodile that resides in this lake. There has never been any incidents recorded, as freshies rarely attack humans, so the crocodile has been left to live in peace, and often just hangs out on the opposite side of the lake.

Why You Need To Visit Fitzroy Island

No trip to Cairns would be complete without a visit to Fitzroy Island.

Originally called Koba/Gabar by Indigenous people who used the lands for fishing and hunting, this magnificent island was renamed by Lieutenant James Cook himself, after the Prime Minister of England, Augustus Fitzroy. Over the years, the island has attracted many tourists and locals alike, and continues to play an important role in Australian history today.

Visiting Fitzroy Island has never been easier, as the island is freely accessible to the public and only a 45 minute boat ride from Cairns Marina. Hop on board the Raging Thunder catamaran, and take in scenic views of Cairns Hinterland, as you cruise through the Great Barrier Reef. Make sure to keep a close eye out for dolphins, and in winter, you may even be lucky enough to see whales (July to September). With 97% of the island being a protected National Park, and fully surrounded by turquoise blue waters and coral reef, you’ve never seen a more lush, tropical paradise than Fitzroy. There are heaps of activities to get stuck into when you arrive at Welcome Bay, and these are our favorites:

Fitzroy Island Walking Paths

Four walking paths have been established on Fitzroy, each leading to a different, unique part of the island. If you’re an avid hiker, it’s not unheard of for visitors to walk all 4 trails in one day, and you will have truly seen the island from almost every angle.

The Summit Circuit it the longest path, at 4.2km, taking you on a winding track through the rainforest, up to the summit near the center of the island. At a height of 269m, this viewpoint offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the rainforest canopy and the Great Barrier Reef, with mainland Australia in the background. The Summit Circuit is also the most challenging walk offered on the island, due to the steep incline to reach the summit.

The second longest path is the Lighthouse Track at 3.6km, which takes you slightly closer to the coastline, and around to the old lighthouse. This lighthouse was used as a coast watch station during World War II, but has since been decommissioned and turned into a visitor center. A smaller, unmanned lighthouse was built on Little Fitzroy Island to replace its predecessor (which can be accessed via guided sea kayak tours). Make sure to look closely for humpback whales off the coast!

The magical Secret Garden Track is only 1km in length, and takes you inland, up stone steps that meander through the rainforest, over tree roots and under vines. This track feels like something straight out of the set of King Kong, offering a tropical vibe like nothing you will have experienced before.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Nudey Beach Track. This 1.2km walk takes you along the coast to the best beach in Australia...

Don’t forget to pack your swimmers though, because despite the name, this isn’t actually a nude beach. Nudey promises a daily dose of sun, sea and relaxation, with soft white sand and crystal clear blue waters. As Australia’s best rated beach for 2018, enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in safe, sheltered waters, and discover the vibrant marine life that thrives off the coral shores, amongst the tropical birds and reptiles found on land. You may find yourself alone at Nudey Beach, leaving you to enjoy this picturesque island experience and all its untouched natural beauty.

Did you know the Great Barrier Reef is home to six types of marine turtles? Located in Welcome Bay on Fitzroy Island is the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) . Run entirely by volunteers, the CTRC monitors and aids in the recovery of sick and injured turtles, before returning them to the ocean. Join a 45 minute guided tour of the facilities and meet some of these magnificent turtles on their road to recovery. With only 15 spaces available for the tour each day, we recommend booking when you arrive on the island, to avoid disappointment.

Fitzroy Island’s warm, turquoise waters provide the perfect conditions to observe the tropical marine life beneath the surface. Whether you’re planning to snorkel in the shallows, or scuba dive in the deep, you’re going to have your breath taken away by the marine life that inhabit the fringing coral reefs. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to swim alongside sea turtles, and maybe even find your own Nemo! If you have a blast scuba diving, you can actually take your PADI open water course at The Dive Centre on the island, and become a certified diver.

Not only will the company provide your return ferry transport to Cairns, they also offer a variety of activity passes that you can choose from. This day trip starts with check in at the Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns from 8:30am, for a 9:00am departure. Enjoy all these activities on the island, and return to Cairns for 5:00pm.
